Assignment 3: Chapter 1 Night Questions

1.Q. Who is Moishe the Beadle?

A.He is a poor man, but people like the presence of him. A majority of the time he was almost invisible. He was very strange but in a nice/good way.

2.Q. Why did Eliezer cry when he prayed?

A. Elie didn't know why he was cry he just had the urge and cried.

3.Q. When Moishe/Moche returned what did he tell?

A. Moishe/Moche said that the train with the deportees had crossed the Hungarian borderand. Polish territory, had been taken over by the Gestapo. The train had stopped, and the jews were ordered to get off and onto waiting trucks. Then trucks headed toward a forest, where everyone was told to get out. They were forced to dig huge trenches, and when they finished their work, the men from the Gestapo began killing. Without any haste, they fired at their prisoners. Babys were tossed into the air and were used as targets for their machine guns......................EW!

4.Q. Why didn't people believe him?

A. No one believed him because they all thought that he just wanted them to feel sorry for him and that he needed attention.

A.1. they arrested leaders of the Jewish community 2. they couldn't stay out past six that was there curfew 3. they weren't allowed to have anything with monitary value 4. they had to wear a yellow star 5. soldiers could go in their house 6. they were put in the ghetto

A.The Jews didn't believe that Hitler really intended to annihilate the jewish people

8.Q. Describe the conditions in the train (at the end of the chapter).

A. There were 80 people to 1 car *

the one in charge would be killed if ANYONE escaped

there was very little bread and water

there were bars on the windows that were checked before they left
